Gather the People

Dear Friend,

The winter months are a busy time of year for Catholic Climate Covenant’s Youth Mobilization program. Our student leaders are hard at work organizing and hosting climate summits and lobby days for other youth in their regions. In the past couple months we’ve engaged with hundreds of high school students to advocate for our common home and take action on the local level. We hosted a summit in Chicago that brought together 80 students and it was filled with energy and thoughtfulness. In Boston 60 of our students participated in the Massachusetts Youth Climate Coalition lobby day. The students shared that the experience gave them hope and they were proud to participate in democracy and to represent the Catholic faith. It has been a blessed 2 months and we still have more to come!

As I take a moment to reflect on the amazing work and commitment the students have showcased, I also think about the many adults who have supported their efforts. Our adult allies have given their time to share their wisdom and experience with the youth, have taken servant leadership roles at the summits and lobby days by organizing transportation, helping set up, serving lunch, etc., and have supported our youth efforts fiscally. The program wouldn’t be the success that it is without an intergenerational approach.

The first reading of Ash Wednesday (Joel 2:16) calls on the Church to include everyone: “Gather the people, notify the congregation; assemble the elders, gather the children and the infants.” I am grateful that this is the community we at the Covenant have been experiencing thanks to all of you!

In this newsletter, you will hear more about what we’ve been up to this month and opportunities to take part in our call to care for creation.
