Recharging for the Journey Ahead

Dear Friend,

It’s hard to believe that since you opened your last newsletter from the Covenant, we’ve welcomed a new Pope, celebrated the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si’, and heard from the USCCB about the role of young people in the future of creation care and the Church. This has been a historic year in the life of the Church and for creation care, and it’s only June!

If you’re like me, you’re probably only just now getting a chance to catch your breath — between graduations, weddings, jubilees, ordinations, Laudato Si’ celebrations, and everything in between, there’s a good chance that if you’re reading this, you’re ready for a refresher.

So, how do we end the rest of the year on a high note? Here are just some of the many actions you can consider taking in your community:

  • Take the time to rest. There’s a good chance that if you’re reading this, you've also experienced the full range of May events and celebrations that have taken place over the last few months. A plethora of stressful activities like these — even joyful, celebratory ones — can leave us exhausted. You cannot pour from an empty cup, so take some time this week to rest and relax.
  • Create a Creation Care Team in your parish or Catholic community to live Laudato Si’. There are hundreds of creation care teams across the U.S. working with schools and parishes and in their communities to care for the world around us.
  • Enroll your parish or diocese in the Laudato Si’ Action Platform. LSAP equips the Church to achieve lasting solutions to the ecological crisis. Central to the platform are seven goals to accomplish during a seven-year journey toward environmental sustainability. You can find more information here.
  • Keep up with our Action Alerts. Whenever we mobilize Catholics to defend Catholic Social Teaching and creation from attack, we’ll send out action alerts for your help. You can find more information on those Action Alerts here. You can also view all of our advocacy resources, as well as our Encounter campaign, here.
  • Consider donating to the Covenant. We just wrapped up our spring appeal campaign, and our grand finale included launching a new resource to offset your carbon footprint, called CathCAP. Your gifts to the Covenant allow us to create more tools like these and to host events across the U.S. that educate and mobilize Catholics to make a difference in their community.
  • Participate in our Pilgrims of Hope for Creation initiative. To celebrate the Jubilee Year, the Covenant is teaming up with over 20 other Catholic and creation care organizations to encourage people to plan small pilgrimages in their communities. These pilgrimages are usually taken to an ecologically beautiful (or devastated) area near your parish community. Many people are walking, but some are hiking and biking too. Check out the POHFC website for more information.

But of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the action that serves as the very foundation for all that we do: pray. I saved the best for last. Prayer is the most important tool at our disposal. Throughout this newsletter, you’ll read about plenty of people who need your prayers, and I hope you’ll spare just a moment in your busy life for them. Galatians 6:2 reminds us — “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Thank you for everything that you do for creation — not just for us here at the Covenant, but for the people in your community and parish, too. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed. We see your ora et labora, and we keep you in our prayers.

With incredible gratitude,

Katie Zakrzewski

Action of the month:
Tell the EPA to remain true to its mission

On April 11th, Catholic Climate Covenant joined other faith-based organizations and sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Administrator, Lee Zeldin, expressing our grave concerns regarding the administration’s intention to repeal 32 critical, life-saving protections against pollution and the ongoing efforts to reduce staffing needed to protect human health. In his announcement of the deregulations, Secretary Zeldin stated, “We are driving a dagger straight into the heart of the climate change religion.”

We invite you to join the Covenant and other people of faith and send your own letter to EPA Administrator Zeldin. We encourage you to personalize the letter with your own experiences and response to his proposals. Let us lift a strong and unified Catholic voice on creation care and express that these actions are not in keeping with Catholic teachings, and that it is our faith that calls us to “hear the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.”
