As a Catholic responding to Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, which calls all of us to the sacred task of protecting our common home and caring for its most vulnerable inhabitants, I applaud and thank the EPA for finalizing strong emissions standards for power plants.
Fossil fuel-burning power plants are responsible for roughly a quarter of climate pollution in the United States. The new standards will not only reduce carbon dioxide but also other harmful pollutants, such as particulate matter, nitrous oxides, and sulfur dioxide. They have the potential to lower carbon emissions by over 1,000 million metric tons through 2042. This reduction will alleviate both health and environmental degradation, especially for our most vulnerable neighbors and communities.
It is the moral responsibility of our nation to protect our common home, advance environmental justice, protect human health, and tackle the climate crisis. Thank you for taking this important step to protect human health and our future. We look forward to continuing to work together on this important task.
Sincerely,
