Why should you write?

Catholic Teachings on Creation: Our faith compels us to protect God's creation and lift the issues impacting the poorest and most vulnerable who are disproportionately affected by climate change. By writing to your governor, you are advocating for the well-being of all people, especially vulnerable communities and future generations.
Urgency of Action: The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat; it is happening now. Extreme weather events, loss of biodiversity, and polluted air and water in our states are just some of the issues that demand immediate action from our leaders.
Your Voice Matters: As Catholics, we have a powerful moral voice. By writing to your governor, you are joining the Church’s tradition of advocating for the common good and pushing for positive change.

How can you help?

Catholic Climate Covenant and Laudato Si Movement - North America have worked together to create a state-oriented letter template. You are encouraged to personalize the language in this letter to best reflect your concerns, as well as initiatives and legislation specific to your state. You can access the form that contains that customizable letter here.

You can also contact your state’s Catholic conference to ask which climate policies will be included in your state’s Catholic conference discussion this year.

Subject: A message from a concerned Catholic on climate change!

Message:

Dear Governor [INSERT NAME], I write to you as a Catholic in [INSERT STATE] concerned about the threat that climate change poses to God’s creation, people who are impoverished, and current and future generations. Our faith demands us to heed our Church’s call to care for God’s creation, which includes honoring the dignity and sanctity of all people. Policies that improve the environment and reduce and mitigate the effects of climate change advance our faith and civic responsibilities as people of God. As we enter 2025, I encourage you to implement policies and propose legislation in our state to provide incentives to move away from fossil fuels, create green jobs, and ensure that the people living closest to the margins and climate impacts and future generations enjoy a safer present and future. As a Catholic, I encourage you to work with our state legislators on both sides of the aisle to craft policies that: protect life and promote human dignity; do not add additional burdens on low-income people; provide green job opportunities with good pay and benefits; reduce costs for renewable and clean energy; promote the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP); and protect our environment and lower greenhouse gas pollution. I pray that you will work across the aisle with legislators and that you will continue listening to concerned residents of our state. We are here to support you in this work to care for our common home. By working together, we can ensure that caring for our state, our environment, and all of the people in it will prevail.
