I write to you as a Catholic deeply concerned that the issue of climate change is not being addressed by Congress. I call upon you to join the bipartisan House Climate Solutions Caucus, so that Congress can begin to craft and implement solutions that protect the well-being and future of us all - especially the poor and vulnerable neighbors among us - as well as the security of our health, food, water, economy, and nation. If you have recently joined the Climate Solutions caucus, I thank you.
Pope Francis believes, as do I, that Congress has an important role to play in creating dialogue and solutions. During his address on September 24, 2015 to the 114th Congress, he asked many of you present then, to “enter into dialogue with all people about our common home” “since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all.” He urged Congress, “Now is the time for courageous actions and strategies, aimed at implementing a ‘culture of care’ and ‘an integrated approach to combatting poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature.”
The bipartisan House Climate Solutions Caucus is a place where courageous actions and strategies can occur. In the spirit of respect and cooperation, I encourage you to join. If you have recently joined the Climate Solutions caucus, I thank you. Together and with other members of Congress, you can lead the nation in implementing solutions to the challenges facing God’s creation. The well-being and future of us all, especially the poor and vulnerable neighbors among us, depend on your courageous leadership. Now is the time.
Sincerely,
