Urge your Senators to Support Climate Action

We must act now, individually and globally, to mitigate climate change. Failure to do so will mean increased heat waves, decreased rainfall, loss of biodiversity, and sea level rise. The most vulnerable (the poor, the elderly, children) both at home and abroad will be first and most impacted. But climate impacts on health, food, water, and economic well-being will affect everyone. The International Climate Accountability Act would help keep the United States in the Paris Agreement and ensure it remains a global leader in the effort to prevent climate change. Urge your Senators to support the International Climate Accountability Act (S.1743).

Background:
On June 1, 2017, President Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the Paris Agreement, an international treaty signed by the United States and 193 other nations to address climate change. The goal of the agreement is to work cooperatively to prevent the global temperature from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius, and strive to keep the rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius.  The agreement is a major step towards averting the climate crisis and ensuring a livable future for all peoples and our planet.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) responded to the President’s withdrawal by saying,

“The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) along with Pope Francis and the entire Catholic Church, have consistently upheld the Paris Agreement as an important international mechanism to promote environmental stewardship and encourage climate change mitigation. The President's decision not to honor the U.S. commitment to the Paris Agreement is deeply troubling.”

On June 5th, 2019, the International Climate Accountability Act (S.1743) was introduced in the Senate, calling upon the President to develop and submit a plan for the United States to meet its commitments under the Agreement, and to prohibiting the funding of efforts towards our nation’s withdrawal from it.  This bipartisan bill is cosponsored by 46 Senators.

As faithful Catholics seeking national and global leadership to address the climate crisis, we ask that you thank your Senators who have sponsored S.1743, and to call upon your Senators who have not, to do so.
